The Wilderness Trekking School (WTS) is offered every spring and fall and consists of five mandatory class lectures and five field days.  Topics include (but are not limited to) clothing, nutrition, navigation by map and compass, snow travel (including ice axe use and self-arrest), avalanche, weather, first aid, and survival.   Training and experience in these skills are mandatory to waive WTS.  Completion or waiver of WTS, or completion of CMC’s Backpacking School, is required to obtain a “C” classification and for entry into the Basic Mountaineering School (BMS).  It is the intention of this waiver to allow those CMC members who already possess the required skills to qualify for BMS and become “C” hikers without being required to take WTS. We would, however, encourage those of you who qualify to consider volunteering to become an instructor with the WTS.
